Course Description
This course offers a broad overview of people of African descent in the United States, relevant theoretical perspectives, and empirical research centered on Black people. The course discusses historical foundations related to racism and oppression, developmental processes such as racial identity development and socialization, and the experiences of Black people in multiple contexts (i.e. community, education, mental health, and civic engagement). This is an interactive course in which students will engage in vibrant class discussions, participate in reflective exercises, and explore real-world applications of course concepts.
