Course Description

This course examines the interface between land and sea and the unique assemblage of plants and animals adapted to live half on the land and half in the water. Extensive fieldwork on the Mullica River-Great Bay estuary will introduce students to tidal rivers, freshwater marsh, brackish marsh, and salt marsh habitats. Plant and animal distribution patterns and adaptation at the physiological, biochemical and genetic levels of tidal flooding, anoxia and high salt content, will be related to environmental gradients through the estuary. This course meets the plant requirement for the BIOL major.
