AFRICAN AMERICANS ON TELEVISION

Course Description

This course will examine portrayals of African Americans on television beginning with Amos 'n' Andy in the 1950s, through to popular television shows of today such as Scandal, Blackish and Empire. In the course, students will analyze common stereotypes of African Americans and conduct content analysis research on various shows in genres such as sitcoms, dramas, reality television and news. Students will also have the opportunity to examine research on the impact of portrayals of African Americans on perceptions of African Americans.
