Course Description

Open to Dance majors or minors only, or those with significant dance experience. Not open to those with credit for ARTP 3300. Dance History invites students to investigate the relationship between dance and cultural hegemony in the United States, with a particular focus on race and racism. To challenge the Eurocentric biases that privilege Western concert dance, we will study ballet and modern dance alongside African Diaspora dance forms including jazz, tap, and hip hop, considering how dances are created and how histories are told.
