Course Description
Responsible management and ethical use of data from its collection to its deletion defines data stewardship. Case studies highlight data privacy and security; managing metadata and tracking data provenance (its origin and modification); the ethics of data gathering, storage, and use; recognizing and combating bias in a dataset; and the fair use doctrine for creative works when viewed as data. Through these case studies, students have the opportunity to learn about technical frameworks that can be used to implement a program of data stewardship that meets the needs of an organization, legal requirements, and ethical demands. Interested students in programs other than DSSA should contact the instructor for permission to register.
