Course Description

Not open to students with credit for GAH 1031. A study of the image and concept of the hero as seen in Western literature from antiquity to the present and comparison of that literary image with other images (including visual and musical representations of fictional and non-fictional heroes, especially those of modern times)- with some discussion of the influence of the literary conception on our perception of historical and contemporary figures and analysis of the changing concepts of the hero over time.
