Course Description
This course will investigate attitudes of the male-dominated Byzantine society toward women, as they can be deduced from the lives of female saints. With the help of Hagiography (Saints' Lives), we will trace the position of women in the spiritual cosmos of Orthodox Byzantium and the daily life of Byzantine nuns. Students will use primary sources that are all translated into English.
