Course Description
To study gay and lesbian literature is to examine not only the particular sensibility of a writer but also the changing historical conditions and representations of gay and lesbian life. Obviously, there is no single gay and lesbian literary tradition. But there are some themes common to literature written by lesbians and gay men about lesbian and gay lives. This course will focus on the themes of: coming of age and coming out; forming community and struggling for liberation; facing the plagues of AIDS and cancer; grief and loss; continuing the struggle of living with the past and looking to the future.
