Course Description
This course focuses on writing feature articles for newspapers and magazines. Unlike news articles, which generally focus on the immediate-the who, what, when, where, and why-of a breaking event, feature stories blend the reporter's craft (close observation, background research, interviewing) with narrative approaches that might be more familiar to readers of fiction. The best feature articles, for example, often come alive through sharp descriptions of scenes and settings, characters, and dialogue. In addition to the primary goal of writing and revising their own work, students will read and critique both published feature articles and the work of their classmates.
