HISTORY AND IMPACT OF EMO MUSIC
Course Description
This course will study the popularity, proliferation, and social impacts of emo music along with associated sub-genres of punk rock. Students will track key moments in the genre as the music evolved and artists went from playing in basements to stadiums and back. It will also explore critical historical, social, and psychological elements including the role of race and gender, the genre's growth alongside the Internet, the importance of New Jersey, and the ways in which the genre dealt with topics like self-harm and allegations of sexual violence.
