Course Description

The study of geologic structures such as folds, faults, joints, and related structures. Includes how to recognize and describe them, methods of studying them, and the mechanics of their formation. The course begins with a discussion of the basic principles of stress and strain, and then applies those principles to each class of structure. Analytical techniques include strain analysis, Mohrs circles for stress and strain, orthographic and equal area net projections, interpretations of geologic maps, and construction of geologic cross sections. Requires field trips and labs. Offered in odd numbered Springs.
