JULIUS CAESAR: HISTORY, ART, AND FICTION

Course Description

Examination of the historical Julius Caesar, as portrayed by himself, his contemporaries, and historians, and the Caesar persona of literary authors and artists from antiquity to modern novels. We will consider how much each view of Caesar was a projection (sympathetical or antipathetic) onto him of the writer's own political, moral, or philosophical bias. Students will define and defend their conception of the real Julius Caesar.
