Course Description
Uses earthquakes as an example of how scientists approach problems, formulate and test theories, and gain an understanding of natural phenomena. Begins by studying accounts of a few major earthquakes to establish what happens during an earthquake. These observations are used as a background for considering historic interpretations of the causes of earthquakes and the progression to modern ideas. How scientists study earthquakes and what earthquakes can teach mankind about the earth are considered. The status of earthquake prediction and control is examined. Finally, ways to reduce earthquake damage are evaluated.
