Course Description
A general introduction to the nature of law and legal institutions as a means of social control. Court cases and social science research are used to examine the procedures, rationales, and objectives of detention and confinement in American society with a focus on cruel and unusual punishment, civil commitment, competency, insanity, right-to-treatment, and juvenile as well as quasi-criminal commitments.
