DEMOCRATIZATION IN LATIN AMERICA
Course Description
This course explores the basic dimensions of democracy in Latin America. It is designed as an introduction to the politics and economics of the democratization process that has occurred in Latin America since the 20th century. In examining both the regional and country-specific trajectories of the democratization process in Latin America, we will review many of the most pressing challenges currently confronting the region. Topics will include: the persistence of intense poverty despite democratization, recently failed and ongoing revolutions, patterns of economic development and decline, the indigenous movement, the rule of law and democratic governance, the military in politics, and globalization.
