Course Description
Not open to students with credit for GSS 3103. The course examines the history of the American labor movement (emphasizing 20th century history), the structure, demographics, politics, and economics of labor unionism. With that background, GSS 3603 analyzes the relatively recent decline of union membership; policy responses and possible solutions to declining unionization including: broadening membership across industry, skill, gender and race lines; amending labor laws; and implementing new organizing strategies, including social movement unionism. The course integrates documentary and dramatic films into the exploration of topics.
