Course Title

NATION BUILDING: MODERN GREECE

Course Description

This course examines the Greeks from their position as a component element of Ottoman society to their formation of an independent national state that is a component element of the present day European Union. It broadly surveys their political history as well as the social, cultural, and intellectual developments within the context of the multi-religious, multi-ethnic Ottoman Empire, and examines the complex issues involved in creating and preserving an independent Balkan state in the modern period. Straddling the divide between East and West, Greek national identity will be considered with regard to these larger issues in mind.
