Course Description

This course examines the historical interactions of Muslims and Eastern Christians from the earliest development of Islam in the seventh-century to the present. Focus will be on the variety of Christian beliefs among the Greek Orthodox, Coptic, Nestorian, Pre-Chalcedonian Christians and their relationship with their Muslim neighbors in the Middle East, North Africa, Central Asia, and the Balkans. Aspects of conflict and cooperation will be discussed within their social, political and cultural contexts.
