Course Description

Pre-1700 Course and British Literature Course. This course examines the development of the medieval romance, from its origins in historical narratives to their flourishing in the late twelfth and thirteenth century, and the movement of romance genres into the works of Geoffrey Chaucer and other Middle English authors. We will emphasize the processes of reading and literary circulation at the time, considering the works in their manuscript contexts and in relation to oral transmission and performance. All literary works read in modern English translation.
