Course Description

Pre-1700 Course or Ethnic/Postcolonial Course. This course examines wider medieval European literatures from the Mediterranean and continental Europe, covering the period from the late Roman Empire to the 14th century. All literary works will be read in translation, with an emphasis on literary transmission, and historical contexts. Texts and authors may include Augustine, Boethius, Dante Alighieri, Chretien de Troyes, Juan de Ruiz, Gottfried von Strassburg, Guillaume de Lorris/Jean de Meun, and Icelandic sagas.
