CONTEMPORARY GENOCIDES IN AFRICA
Course Description
Open to Graduate Students only. This course will address the causes and consequences of genocide and mass atrocity in the recent past, with particular emphasis on conflicts in Africa, such as Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Darfur, southern Sudan, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Uganda. Questions we will ask include: Why is genocide such a common feature of the modern era? What historical factors have made certain societies more prone to genocide than others? Why has the international community failed to curb outbreaks of genocidal violence? What are some promising approaches to the prevention of genocide now and in the future?
