Course Description

This course provides a comprehensive overview of the field of international human rights. Students will analyze the contemporary debates surrounding human rights, especially regarding their origins, universalism, and relativism in connection to today's international system. Students will be exposed to regional and national trends of human rights promotion around the world. The seminar will also discuss scholarship that examines the tensions of prioritizing civil and political rights over economic and social rights. Finally, the seminar studies the major international institutions, political processes, and procedures by which human rights norms are established and enforced.
