ENFORCED DISAPPEARANCES IN LATIN AMERICA
Course Description
Enforced disappearances have been categorized as a crime against humanity according to the International Criminal Court and is a method of repression in at least 85 countries. This course will analyze enforced disappearances in Latin America, a strategy utilized by state and non-state actors in an attempt to erase the very existence of individuals while simultaneously sowing uncertainty in civil society. Enforced disappearances and the consequences of this mass atrocity will be examined on multiple levels, including the rationale of the perpetrators, the social repercussions of this crime, and the grassroots responses to locate and identify the victims.
