Course Description

This course will explore the idea of a universal language, or God language, through the history of philosophy. Inspired by, and using the film, Arrival, we will study excerpts from Xenophanes, Parmenides, the Old Testament, Plato's Cratylus, Giordano Bruno, Pico della Mirandola, Lull, Rabelais, Leibniz, Hobbes, Neurath, Hermann Weyl, Hesse, Michel de Certeau, Eco's study on the "perfect language," and Moro's text Impossible Languages.
