Course Description
This Political Theory seminar explores debates over ideals, institutions, and identities in American political thought from the revolutionary period to the Civil Rights Movement and beyond. We will discuss, among other topics, the challenges of founding a republic, federalism and the relationship between the states, the representation of citizens, varieties of individualism and nationalism, and the character of State, Nation, and Citizen as these concepts appear throughout American politics and culture.
