Course Description

Social movements are major forces of change in modern society. They influence public policy, political discourse, popular culture, and often change the lives of the people who join them. This course will provide an overview of the major theories and concepts scholars have used to address questions such as: How do social movements emerge, and why do people join them? How are movements organized? What kinds of strategies and tactics can social movements use to be successful? How do movements impact society, and how can we measure success? We will also hear directly from grassroots organizers and activists themselves. Students will apply what they learn throughout the course to analyze a social movement of their choice.
