Course Description
This course examines transformative justice (TJ) as an alternative framework to traditional punitive systems. The course will explore the ways in which justice responses can either perpetuate trauma and harm, or promote healing and accountability. Interdisciplinary frameworks will equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to develop concrete, creative approaches to respond to violence without relying on police, prisons, and the criminal legal system. Topics covered include: victim/survivor-centered approaches, intersectionality, structural inequalities, trauma-informed care, restorative justice, community-based safety strategies, victim advocacy.
