Course Description
This course offers the work of Langston Hughes as a way of better understanding race and racism in the United States. Using historical, political, psychological, and other frameworks, we will read a body of Hughes's fiction with the goal not only of recognizing the human impacts of racism, in particular in the context of Jim Crow America, but of appreciating, more broadly, the unique ability of literature to humanize the past.
