Program Description

Introduction

The objective of this program is to address the public health need of physical inactivity by equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for entry-level Exercise Science positions in public or private industries, a career as a P-12 Health & Physical Education teacher or future graduate study in related areas. Students choose from one of two concentrations: General or Health and Physical Education. The science-based curriculum in the Exercise Science General Concentration will combine the study of exercise testing and prescription, exercise physiology, and research methodology with supervised practical experiences. Students will learn how to conduct and evaluate health and fitness assessments, design and implement exercise programs based upon assessment findings, and monitor health and fitness changes/progression over time. Students in the General Concentration will be prepared for success in select certification examinations such as the American College of Sports Medicine’s (ACSM) Certified Exercise Physiologist. .

The Exercise Science Health and Physical Education Concentration is suitable for those wishing to pursue a career as a P-12 Health & Physical Education teacher. This concentration includes health science and education courses, including required P-12 fieldwork, necessary for certification in the State of New Jersey. Students in this concentration are assigned two preceptors, one from Exercise Science and one from Education. Students should consult both preceptors on a regular basis to ensure all graduation and teacher certification requirements are met.

Admission to the Program

The Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science is open to Stockton students in good academic standing. Students must meet the math requirements of an SAT Math score of 570 or higher, or an ACT Math score of 24 or higher, or an Accuplacer Next Gen Advanced Algebra and Functions score of 245 or above is required for admission to the program.

Conditional Admission to the Program

Students who do not meet the mathematics requirement may request from the Admissions Office a Conditional Admission to the Exercise Science program. Conditional Admission will grant students one academic year to complete the necessary sequence of math courses to meet the mathematics requirement. Students admitted under a conditional admission will be eligible to register in EXSC 1101 (Principles of Health Behavior) and/or in EXSC 1102 (First Aid, CPR and Athletic Training). The progress of students with conditional admission will be evaluated in the Fall and Spring semesters, after grades have been submitted.

The progress review process is as follows:

  1. Students who meet the math requirement in the Fall semester will receive a letter informing them that the “conditional admission” has been removed from their record.

  2. Students who do not meet the math requirements in the Fall semester will receive a letter indicating they have until the end of the Spring semester to meet the requirements.

  3. Students who meet the math requirement in the Spring semester will receive a letter informing them that the “conditional admission” has been removed from their record.

  4. Students who do not meet the math requirement by the Spring semester will receive a letter indicating their major has been changed to “undeclared”, in the School of General Studies. As appropriate, a new preceptor will be assigned to the student. The letter will advise students to meet with their new preceptors to choose a new major.

Note: a conditional acceptance may not be recommended for students requiring a sequence of more than two math courses to meet the mathematics requirement
